For the fifth consecutive year, a group of California grower-shippers is joining forces with the Allen Lund Co., La Canada-Flintridge, Calif., in making the holiday season brighter for needy families.
Grower-shippers have donated more than 35,000 pounds of citrus and pears and more than 250 cartons of fresh vegetables to Navidad en el Barrio, Los Angeles, a nonprofit organization that serves more than 20,000 Southern California families, said Tracey Lewin, assistant manager for the transportation company’s Los Angeles refrigerated division.
Lund is providing transportation for the produce from the packinghouses to Navidad.
“We are grateful to our growers, who have stepped up in what has been a very challenging year for everyone,” Lewin said. “Navidad is an important effort, one the Allen Lund Co. continues to support and believe in.”
The participating California grower-shippers include Paramount Citrus Association, Delano; Scully Packing Co. LLC, Finley; Sun Pacific Shippers, Los Angeles; Sunsation Farms Inc., Monterey; and, Taylor Farms California Inc., Salinas.
The philanthropy of the Allen Lund Co. stems from its founder, Lewin said.
“Mr. Lund came from humble beginnings,” she said. “It’s truly important to him and his family and their faith to give back."
Danny Villanueva, former National Football League star and broadcast industry executive, founded Navidad en el Barrio nearly 40 years ago. During that time, it has assisted nearly 700,000 families.
