(Jan. 2) By summer, Henningsen Cold Storage Co. expects to have two warehouses within a mile of each other in a Portland, Ore., suburb.

“The two current warehouses in the Portland market are full,” Bill Daniel, director of corporate communications for the Hillsboro, Ore.-based company, said. “That prompted us to build a new one.”

The plan for the first phase of the temperature-controlled logistics center in Gresham, Ore., is a 5.3 million-cubic-foot warehouse with at least 16,000 pallet positions. The property has the capability of holding a warehouse of nearly 10 million cubic feet. Daniel said that whether the warehouse will expand to the land’s capacity depends on consumer demand.

Henningsen Cold Storage has warehouses in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania. The new center is the first one the company has opened since 1999. It leases its warehouse in Seattle and bought the warehouse in Pennsylvania in 2001.

The Seattle warehouse and both of the Gresham, Ore., warehouses will serve the Portland market.

Daniel said that the new warehouse will offer the same features as the one a mile away. In addition to temperature-controlled storage and docking, the facility offers case-pick consolidation and shipping.

“We pick cases, and build pallets with products from multiple vendors that are shipping to the same customer,” Daniel said. “Then we put it on the truck and ship it. That way, each vendor can take advantage of a full truck rate.”

The facility can store frozen and refrigerated food, as low as 20 degrees. Its features, Daniel said, include Logix software service and T5 fluorescent bulbs.

“Our lights are made for a frozen environment,” Daniel said. “They have motion sensors and automatically dim when no one is around. They’re also much brighter than the average bulb.”

Henningsen is a full-service, public refrigerated warehousing company that provides warehousing and logistics services. The company has local shuttles, as well as a national and international shipping program.
