It’s no mistake that Maxco Supply Inc.’s new facility is about halfway between Salinas and Watsonville, Calif. Known for its innovative strawberry packaging, the company opened the center just in time for the 2011 strawberry harvest, according to a news release.

A growing customer base in the berry market spurred Maxco, Parlier, Calif., to locate the new 12,000-square-foot facility at Castroville, Calif., according to a news release. The cooling and packaging center complements Maxco’s existing facility in south Salinas. It provides additional make-up and distribution in the region.

The company also has operations in Santa Maria, Oxnard and Fullerton, which handle berries, grapes, citrus and tree fruits.

“This is a great location for our customers and very accessible with plenty of inside storage,” said Maxco coastal region manager Steve Jewell in the release.

Maxco has hired a facility manager for Castroville, which is expected to employ more than 30 seasonal workers. Castroville was chosen, according to the release, to serve growers who have shifted their acreage and cooling to the north Salinas and Castroville regions.
