The panel includes (from left), Flavio Alzueta, manager of sales and marketing for GlobalGAP, Horst Lang of Globus SB Warenhaus, Kristian Moeller, GlobalGAP president, Ian Harrison of ASDA/IP Ltd., Norbert Gasser of Fruitservice and Jochen Baumgarten, quality management and IT developer for GlobalGAP. BERLIN — The results of a two-year collaboration between Walmart-Chile and Bayer CropScience showed a drastic reduction in pesticide residue, higher-quality lettuce and a enhanced sustainability measures.

That’s what Marina Hermosilla, sustainability director for Walmart-Chile had to say at a news conference at Fruit Logistica in Berlin on Feb. 7.

Hermosilla outlined the initiative, which helped growers meet requirements for Good Agricultural Practices, adapt sustainable growing practices and lower pesticide residues to acceptable levels.

Before participating in the program, Hermosilla said many producers’ crops were unacceptable.

“They were at the maximum residue levels in our country, especially the local suppliers,” she said.

The presentation also covered supply chain partnerships with Univeg Group and Brazilian melon grower Agricola Famosa.

GlobalGAP nominations

Through March 15, GlobalGAP is accepting nominations for its next board of directors. The board consists of 10 members who serve four-year terms. Five members are from the retail-foodservice sector and five are from the grower-supplier sector.

The election period is March 20 through April 12, said Kristian Moeller, president. The organization plans to announce the new board April 22, and its first meeting is scheduled for early June.

Was the price to grower ever considered in this collaboration?

The producer price has been increased to compensate for the higher costs involve a good quality fruit. Currently we are being monitored by Wal-Mart chile, and can attest to the rigorous examination criteria that are to be certified as a supplier.
