Aldi Inc. has a new five-year plan that includes 650 new grocery stores across the U.S.

The Batavia, Ill.-based retailer is launching its expansion efforts with a new regional headquarters and distribution center to be built in Moreno Valley, Calif., according to a news release. Aldi has budgeted about $3 billion to pay for land, facilities and equipment.

Jason Hart, president of Aldi, said in the release that the chain’s plans for more stores are a reflection of consumer demand. When the new stores are open, Aldi officials expect to serve 45 million customers annually.

“Recently we successfully entered new markets such as Houston, and expanded our presence in competitive markets like South Florida and New York City,” Hart said in the release. “We are eager to bring the Aldi difference to Southern California.”

Aldi officials have not released a list of locations for the new stores, but they did say in the release that the chain has been growing by about 80 stores per year. With the new push, the retailer expects to be opening about 130 new locations annually for the next five years.

The chain’s locations offer about 70 fresh fruit and vegetable commodities regularly, according to the release.

There are currently about 1,300 Aldi stores in 32 states from Kansas to the East Coast. The expansion is expected to add about 10,000 employees to the retailer’s current staff of 18,000, according to the release.
