Alexander Lucas pear Viva Tierra Organic Inc. expects limited volumes of its heirloom organic Alexander Lucas pears, grown in Argentina, to arrive in the U.S. in the last week of April.

Volume on the variety is projected at less than 45 pallets for the season. The pears are packed in 10-kilogram boxes with the Viva Tierra Organic label.

“The Alexander Lucas is a superior pear that deserves more attention in the market,” Paul McCaffrey, sales representative, said in a news release. “They are … something special to add variety to the standard d’anjou and bosc offerings.”

First described as a distinct variety in the mid-1800s, it originated in European monastic orchards along the Loire River. In Argentina, they’re grown in the Rio Negro valley.
