Dole recalls Kroger, Wal-Mart salads

(UPDATED COVERAGE, 12:20 p.m.) Dole Foods Co. Inc. voluntarily recalled more than 1,000 cases of bagged salads distributed under Kroger’s Fresh Selection label and Wal-Mart’s Marketside label because of possible listeria contamination.

No illnesses have been reported.

Currently under recall. All of the products have use-by dates of June 19, according to a June 23 news release from Dole, Monterey, Calif. Dole officials doubt any of the products remained available at retail at the point it issued the recall. Salad were distributed in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, according to the release.

The recall was not posted on the Food and Drug Administration recall list until midday June 25.

Marty Ordman, Dole's vice president of marketing and brand development, said Dole notified all of the retailers who had received the products during the weekend of June 23-24.

The 1,077 cases of recalled bagged salads include: Kroger Fresh Selections Greener Supreme (coded N158 211B 1613 KR04 and Universal Product Code 11110 91039), Kroger Currently under recall. Fresh Selections Leafy Romaine (coded N158 111B KR11 and UPC 11110 91046), and Wal-Mart Marketside Leafy Romaine (coded N158111B and UPC code 81131 02781).

“This precautionary recall notification is being issued due to an isolated instance in which a sample of Marketside Leafy Romaine salad yielded a positive result for listeria monocytogenes in a random sample test conducted by the State of North Carolina,” according to the release.

Dole Fresh Vegetables customer service representatives began contacting retailers, according to the release, and checking to see if the recalled products are no longer on shelves.

Recent bagged salad recalls

On April 14, the company recalled 756 cases of Dole Seven Lettuces salad because of a possible salmonella Currently under recall. contamination. No illnesses were reported in association with that recall.

The Marketside brand was also involved in two recalls in May — one by Taylor Farms, Salinas, Calif., on May 22 for Marketside organic baby spinich, and one by River Ranch Fresh Foods, Salinas, on May 18 for five different bagged iceberg lettuce salad products. No illnesses were reported.
