New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Douglas Fisher, Health Commissioner Mary O’Dowd and Patricia Dombroski, U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator, on Aug. 7 celebrated Farmers Market Week in New Jersey with a visit in the Delran Farmers Market in Delran.

Gov. Chris Christie proclaimed Aug. 4-10 as Farmers Market Week in New Jersey, according a New Jersey Department of Agriculture news release.

Tom Vilsack, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, also proclaimed the week for National Farmers Market Week to encourage healthy eating and support local farmers.

“One of the best places to find the freshest Jersey Fresh produce is at a community farmers market,” Fisher said in the release.  “The Delran market is one of our newest markets, and already it is becoming a neighborhood gathering place where people can shop for fruits, vegetables, local honey, baked items and plants, talk with friends and meet the farmer who grows their food.”

The Delran Farmers Market, opened in June and will run through the end of September, according to the release. Farmers there accept Women, Infants and Children and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers. All eligible citizens can use vouchers toward purchasing fresh produce at the market through Nov, 30.
