Pittsburg, Pa.-based Giant Eagle reportedly added another 2,000 items, including some in produce, to its price reductions launched last March.

Items selected were among the most commonly purchased according to Nielsen research, and the price drop averages around 10%. Giant Eagle senior vice president of merchandising John Tedesco told the Pittsburg Post-Gazette the company took several measures — which include expanding produce deliveries to stores to seven days a week — to find ways to cut prices for customers. The expanded delivery schedule reduced shrink and gained market share as a result, he said.

Unlike Cincinnati-based Kroger Co., which has been phasing out double coupon programs over the past several months, Giant Eagle plans to maintain its policy of doubling coupons up to 99 cents.

Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans also recently ended its price freeze program, citing an improving economy.
