He's an icon, but Griffin is 'just Reggie'

SAN DIEGO — The produce industry celebrated former Kroger vice president of perishables Reggie Griffin’s 42-year career in the industry.

The “Salute to Reggie Griffin Golf Tournament and Dinner” Jan. 23 attracted more than 200 attendees and benefits the United Fresh Foundation. Griffin is chairman of United Fresh Produce Association until the group’s annual convention in Dallas in early May.

Former United Fresh chairman and vice president of produce for CH Robinson, Jim Lemke, said Griffin has been a great leader and respected buyer for many years.

“We see Reggie as an industry icon, but he’s just Reggie,” Lemke said.

Griffin, who said he prefers to work behind the scenes, simply said the event was humbling.

The event was tied into United Fresh’s winter leadership meetings, which hosts about 150 volunteer leaders for sessions on export council, market segment boards and the board of directors meeting.

On Jan. 25, Food and Drug Administration deputy commissioner Michael Taylor is scheduled to address the group about the new proposed safety rule and other regulations under the Food Safety Modernization Act.
