The produce manager at one Oklahoma grocery store is likely wondering if eight will be great, considering he already knows what lucky No. 7 feels like after winning last year’s retail display contest sponsored by the Idaho-Eastern Oregon Onion Committee.
David Dozier, produce manager at GFF Foods Inc., Moore, Okla., has won the contest every year since the committee launched it, said Sherise Jones, marketing director for the Parma, Idaho-based organization.
In previous years the contest was conducted from late December through early February the following year. This year the contest is being billed as the “Fall Harvest Retail Display contest” and is scheduled to run from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
Jones said the contest is designed to increase sales of Idaho and eastern Oregon onions and reward retailers for buying and merchandising onions from the region.
For 2013 the contest theme is football tailgating and grilling. In conjunction with the contest, the committee is giving a free Weber charcoal grill to the first 100 retailers who request them for display purposes. The first 1,000 retailers to enter the contest will receive a free pair of Weber Pincer tongs.
The grand prize for 2013 is $1,000 cash plus a Weber Summit gas grill that has a rotisserie with an infrared burner, a smoker box, sear station and all-weather cover.
First, second and third place prizes will be awarded to up to five winners for each place with prizes of Weber’s Genesis, Performer and Smokey Joe grills, respectively. Up to 10 honorable mention winners will receive a collection of grilling accessories. Registration forms and details are available on the committee’s website at www.usaonions.com.
