During the NGA’s Las Vegas convention Feb. 9-12, Andrew Hadlock of Macey’s, corporate store of Salt Lake City-based Associated Food Stores Inc., won NGA’s Best Bagger Champion.
Hadlock won a $10,000 grand prize, the “Golden Grocery Bag” trophy and the Pan-Oston “Best Bagger Golden Lane,” a special checkout stand that will be installed in his store, according to the release.
Cassandra DeMoura of Stop & Shop New England won $5,000 for second place; Jennifer “Mackenzie” Malicoat of Cosentino’s Food Store Co., Kansas City, Mo., won third; Sarah Morris of Pittsburgh, Pa.-based Giant Eagle Inc., took fourth; and Dewayne Blair of Abbington, Va.-based Food City, won fifth. Third-, fourth- and fifth-place winners won $1,000.
In its 28th year, the Feb. 11 bagging competition was the culminating event of a nationwide contest, with 27 state winners competing in the national championship.
Contestants are judged on speed of bagging, proper bag-building techniques, bag weight distribution as well as style, attitude and appearance, according to the release from the Arlington, Va.-based NGA.
