Darrell Kelso Jr., owner of the Stockton, Calif.-based Onions Etc., said the yearlong promotion, which began in July, is generating 2 cents for every bag the packer, shipper and repacker sells.

July sales generated $3,000 and Kelso said he expects August sales to match or exceed the first month’s proceeds.

Kelso said his company is committing to generate $20,000 the first year and wants to generate $100,000.

He said the program is voluntary and doesn’t require any of his participating West Coast and Midwestern retail customers to financially contribute.

“I don’t know very many people who have never been touched by this disease,” Kelso said. “We have designed bags to partner with our retail clients to give back to the communities we all make money in. This industry has been very good to everyone during difficult times. This is something we hold dear to our hearts as far as in helping people.”

Kelso said 1,800 retail stores are participating in the program which is scheduled to end next summer.

Onions Etc. helped generate money for breast cancer research in the past primarily through financially supporting golf fundraisers, Kelso said.
