Produce Marketing AssociationTo help the produce industry transition to company-specific Universal Product Codes, the Newark, Del.-based Produce Marketing Association plans to host a web seminar May 7.

The “Transitioning from Generic UPC to Brand Owner UPC in Produce” web seminar is scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern. PMA’s manager of science and technology in supply chain efficiencies, Christina D’Allacco, plans to discuss the topic at the GS1 Connect 2013 conference June 13.

According to a PMA news release, retailers will begin to require more specific UPCs, where the prefix is assigned by global standards organization GS1 US. The new UPCs identify packaged produce and the company of origin, which helps retailers identify brands within categories, determine sell-through and shrink data by brand.

PMA plans to develop a UPC migration tool to help guide the industry through the transition, with an expected release date of June 1.
