This is part of a larger recall of peanut products produced by Sunland Inc. that could be contaminated, said Samantha Cabaluna, Earthbound Farm spokeswoman.
The organic salads, Earthbound Farm Baby Spinach Grab & Go Salad Kit with Peanuts, are sold in a 3.5-ounce clamshell with a Universal Product Code of 0-32601-08875-0.
No illnesses related to the recalled product had been reported as of the morning of Oct. 18, Cabaluna said. She said it was likely that fewer than 500 cases of product were recalled.
The peanuts used in the kits were chopped by Sunland, then packed in sealed packages by a third-party packer that contracts with Earthbound Farm.
The kits were distributed to retail supermarkets and foodservice operators in California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, British Columbia and Ontario.
The Earthbound Farm news release announcing the recall referred to the company as Natural Selection Foods.
In 2009, Earthbound Farm announced it was no longer using Natural Selections Foods LLC as a trade name.
But on Oct. 18, Cabaluna said that Natural Selection Foods is still a legal entity, “doing business as” Earthbound Farm.
The recall release included both names because many of the company’s foodservice customers still know it as Natural Selection Foods, and the company wants as many people as possible to be aware of the recall, Cabaluna said.
