Turbana, Shaw’s promote bananas

Banana importer Turbana Corp. has launched a promotion at Shaw’s retail outlets in New England that offers consumers Xbox 360 prizes and benefits Fuel Up to Play 60, an in-school nutrition and fitness program.

The promotion runs through Sept. 27 at participating stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. It features point-of-sale and produce department signage along with radio ads, according to a news release.

Consumers using Shaw’s reward cards who buy three qualifying items will automatically be entered into drawings for Xbox 360 with Kinect consoles. The items include a pound of bananas, as well as select dairy products.

Six of the prizes will be given by Coral Gables, Fla.-based Turbana when the promotion ends. So will a donation to Fuel Up to Play 60, a creation of the National Dairy Council and National Football League in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“We are delighted to be supporting our retailers and their initiative to help their local communities with this campaign,” Marion Tabard, marketing director. “We expect to see a significant increase in volume, as well as a real push in schools to educate children on healthy living. Our hope is to eventually provide this kind of support for all of our valued customers.”

Turbana also imports plantains and Fyffes Gold pineapples. Offerings include fair trade certified bananas and plantains. It’s owned by Fyffes, a European tropical produce importer and distributor; and by Uniban, a co-op of independent banana growers based in Colombia.
