Both operations are expected to open in the fall, with Whole Foods purchasing greenhouse-grown herbs, lettuce, greens and tomatoes from the operation for its nearby stores. Whole Foods Market Inc., Austin, Texas, is getting hyper local for its new Brooklyn, N.Y., store through a partnership with city greenhouse grower Gotham Greens.

A 20,000-square-foot greenhouse is planned for the store, which is scheduled to open this fall. New York-based Gotham Greens plans to operate the greenhouse and do the farming, said Viraj Puri, chief executive officer. Produce grown will be sold to the Gowanus Whole Foods, as well as other Whole Foods locations in the area.

The company plans to have the greenhouse up and running by the time the Whole Foods opens below, supplying herbs, leafy greens and tomatoes. Whole Foods also plans to offer educational tours for area students to learn about greenhouses and farming.

“Gotham Greens has been a valued local supplier of high-quality flavorful and fresh produce to Whole Foods Market since early 2011, making this greenhouse project a natural and extremely exciting next step in our relationship,” said Christina Minardi, Whole Foods Market Northeast Regional President, in a news release.
