Whole Foods uses produce department for bee lesson

(PRNewsFoto/Whole Foods Market) Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods Market Inc. staged one of its produce departments with about half the fruits and vegetables it normally offers to illustrate the importance of bees to agriculture.

The company set up the display at its University Heights store in Providence, R.I., removing all plants dependent on pollinators. Products removed represented 237 of 453 stock keeping units, or about 52%, according to a news release.

Products removed included:

• apples

• onions

• avocados

• carrots

• mangos

• lemons

• limes

• melons

• squash

• eggplant

• cucumbers

• celery

• green onions

• cauliflower

• kale

• broccoli

The demonstration draws attention to the company’s support to the Xerces Society for pollinator preservation. Whole foods plans to donate 10 cents of every pound of organic summer squash sold June 12-15.
