Former AWG president dies

James Baska, former president of Associated Wholesale Grocers, Kansas City, Kan., died July 21, at the age of 83, from lung cancer. He was born on April 3, 1927.

Baska was hired in 1976 as staff attorney at AWG, and retired in the early 1990s as company president. While he was there, the company showed improved revenue and service to consumers. The current president is Jerry Garland.

After leaving AWG, Baska became a board member at Raley’s Supermarkets, Sacramento, Calif. He served there until earlier this year.

The funeral was July 23 in Overland Park, Kan., and his ashes will be held in Rocky Mountain National Park.

His family has suggested donations to Kansas City Hospice, http://www.kansascityhospice.org.
