As it has for the past two decades, the Idaho Potato Commission will mark February, Potato Lovers’ Month, with a retail display contest.

This 2010 Potato Lover’s Month display won a first place award for Buehlers Fresh Foods Market, Wooster, Ohio.

The Eagle, Idaho-based commission is putting up $150,000 in cash and prizes for contest winners, according to a news release. The commission is partnering with Mrs. Dash seasoning and Molly McButter, both of which are products of Alberto-Culver, Melrose Park, Ill., to promote the contest.

The contest is divided into three store size categories.

“The promotion pulls customers into the produce aisle, ultimately increasing sales and profits during an otherwise typically slow month — not to mention that there is a significant cash incentive for them,” Seth Pemsler, the commission’s vice president of retail/international, said in the release.

Cash awards of $1,500 will go to each of the first-place finishers in the three store categories, according to the news release, and second- through fifth- place winners also receive cash prizes. In addition, category managers at each of the top five winning stores in each category win a matching award, the release said.

To enter the contest — open only to retail supermarket chains and independents — a store must design and install a display featuring Idaho potatoes, Mrs. Dash seasoning blends and Molly McButter. The display must be in place for at least one week in the store’s produce section during the contest period, Jan. 31 through Feb. 25.
