The last two Piggly Wiggly stores believed to be operating in Texas were scheduled to close June 13.

According to an article in the Denton Record Chronicle, about 46 store employees were told June 9 that the stores were closing.

The stores were owned by Affiliated Foods Southwest, Little Rock, Ark., which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy late last month.

The Denton stores were the only two remaining from five Texas stores listed on the Piggly Wiggly Web site, according to the Record Chronicle.

Affiliated Foods Southwest closed May 8 and announced it was filing for a “liquidating” Chapter 11 bankruptcy, meaning the company plans to liquidate assets instead of restructuring to continue business. The company listed $101.5 million in liabilities and $47.6 million in assets in court documents at the time of filing.

The company's debts under the Perishables Agricultural Commodities Act were projected to be about $2 million.
