Pom Wonderful LLC, Los Angeles, is shipping fresh pomegranate arils to customers throughout the U.S. and Canada.
“We’ve been working to perfect the process and get the product right for six or seven years,” said Brad Paris, vice president and general manager of produce. “Now we’re to the point where the shelf life is such that we can reach the farthest areas of North America.”
The shelf life is 14 days at pick up, he said, but Pom Wonderful is tweaking the process and expects to be able to extend shelf life in the near future.

The arils are packed in 6 ounce plastic bowls — eight bowls per carton — for retailers with a larger size available to club stores, Paris said. The suggested retail price is $4.99 per bowl.
With the arils out of the pomegranates, consumers are finding the fruit seeds are versatile and can be used with a wide diversity of dishes, Paris said.
“The demand for pomegranates remains strong, and we really feel this product allows retailers to differentiate themselves from their competitors,” Paris said. “Retailers and consumers have been asking for fresh arils for several years.”
Because the arils are not frozen, availability will be dictated by the domestic season, which is beginning to wind down in California. However, Pom Wonderful is holding some of the 2010-11 volume in controlled-atmosphere storage.
“We’re anticipating we’ll continue to ship through February,” Paris said.
