United Natural Foods Inc., Providence, R.I., owner of Albertâs Organics, has started a new organic produce procurement company to fill the needs of large-volume buyers.
Source Organic, Santa Cruz, Calif., which opened in November, buys organic produce direct from international growers and is headed by two former Albertâs Organics employees, Melody Meyer and Kathryn Courtney, said Simcha Weinstein, director of marketing for Source Organic.
Source Organic represents growers in California, New Zealand, Spain, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala and Mexico and other areas, according to a news release. The company offers bananas, citrus, soft fruit, avocados, pineapples, mangoes, berries, apples and pears, and Fair Trade-certified organic bananas, mangoes and blueberries.
Weinstein said the number of growers Source Organic represents depends on the commodity and location, but the company aims to sell large volumes of organic and Fair Trade produce for foodservice and retail customers.
Meyer, senior director of produce procurement, and Courtney, business manager, will be based out of Santa Cruz, Weinstein said, in the same building as Albertâs Organics offices.
