(UPDATED COVERAGE, Oct. 4) Public school teachers can win cash for their classrooms and fruit coupons for their students thanks to a Del Monte Fresh Produce NA Inc. online contest.
“Teacher Monday: Cash for Classrooms” rewards the top 10 vote-getters among educators in kindergarten through grade 12 for each of five weeks. It runs Oct. 4 through Nov. 8.
Fifty winners in the U.S. and Canada will get $750 in cash for school supplies and $250 in Del Monte fresh fruit coupons for classroom snacks or use in educational activities. Each winning classroom will be linked to a school in Guatemala or Costa Rica that will receive $1,000 for school supplies.
To participate, go towww.fruits.com/teachermonday. Teachers can register and students, friends and families can vote multiple times. Vote totals carry over from week to week, but each teacher can win only once.
Dennis Christou, vice president of North American marketing for Coral Gables, Fla.-based Del Monte, said the contest is part of an overall strategy to fight obesity, as is a September deal with Vistar Corp. to distribute Del Monte fresh produce in its vending machines.
“Del Monte wants to get schools and teachers the right tools and much needed help to get children motivated about eating fruits and vegetables,” Christou said, “and the Teacher Monday promotion is one great way to do it.”
In September, Vistar inked a deal to distribute Del Monte grapes, whole bananas, pineapple chunks, apple slices, baby carrots, celery sticks and grape tomatoes in vending machines.
Del Monte plans to promote Teacher Monday with stickers on fresh produce. Posters and other materials will be displayed in stores.
Each week of the promotion, Del Monte will distribute $25 gift certificate booklets for fresh produce in major markets across the U.S. and Canada. Consumers will be notified about the giveaways via Twitter, Facebook and radio promotions.
