(UPDATED COVERAGE, 5:50 p.m.) Ocean Mist Farms plans to unveil a new two-count clamshell package for fennel — also known as sweet anise — Oct. 15-18 at the Produce Marketing Association Fresh Summit 2010.
It’s one of several developments – including a waxless, recyclable carton – that Ocean Mist will showcase at convention booth 2681.
The fennel clamshell is a year-round addition to Ocean Mist’s line, but the company expects sales to be strong almost immediately, marketing director Kori Tuggle said.
“It’s perfect timing for the holiday pull,” she said. “Fennel is an ingredient in holiday cooking. This is a way to package it and sell two bulbs for a higher incremental sell.”
The Castroville, Calif.-based grower-shipper has long offered fennel, mostly in bulk. The bulk has a long fern; in the two-pack it’s trimmed.
Recipes with fennel — popular in Italian cuisine — are on the company’s website.
At the PMA Fresh Summit, Ocean Mist will also debut its new waxless, recyclable carton for celery, broccoli and romaine.
“For hydrocooled or iced vegetable commodities, the industry standard is a waxed carton,” Tuggle said. “For two years we’ve been developing an alternative ClimaProof carton with International Paper. We’re debuting a whole line at PMA.”
Ocean Mist also has plans at PMA to unveil a new section of its website devoted to sustainability issues.
At PMA, Ocean Mist will have on-site spring water dispensers; water cups made of compostable corn material, and will give away reusable water bottles and shopping totes.
