The massive food donation that follows the Produce Marketing Association’s annual Fresh Summit convention and exposition gave more than 266,000 pounds of fresh produce and flowers to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, a member of Feeding America.

The Orlando convention closed Oct. 18, when exhibitors donated product to the food bank. More than 100 local food bank volunteers helped collect the produce, which was distributed to nonprofit agencies in Second Harvest’s network of 600 organizations in six central Florida counties, according to a PMA news release.

“This donation is such an important contribution we make to the community here, especially given the hard economic times that have plagued our country and this state,” said Bryan Silbermann, president and chief executive officer of PMA, in the release.

Exhibitors donate about 250,000 pounds each year to food banks in the Fresh Summit host city.

“This is an especially meaningful contribution, not only due to the sheer size of it, but also because fresh fruits and vegetables are the very kinds of highly nutritious food that our low-income families, seniors and other are often lacking in their diets,” said Dave Krepcho, president and chief executive officer of Second Harvest Food Bank, in the release.
