(Nov. 1) A top importer of fall and winter vegetables and melons from Mexico will bring in organic product from south of the border this year.

Los Angeles-based The Giumarra Cos. announced Oct. 31 it will sell organic green and colored bell peppers, cucumbers and cantaloupes from Mexico this fall.

The commodities, grown by the Llano family of Guaymas, located in Mexico’s Sonora region, will be packed under the Llano Organic brand name, said Nick Rendon, sales manager in Giumarra’s Nogales, Ariz. office.

The Llanos, a longtime Giumarra partner, began growing organic cantaloupes and shadehouse vegetables in response to demand from customers and consumers, Rendon said.

The line will be available in North American markets beginning in November, he said.

Giumarra recently acquired 50 acres of new land in Sonora in part to expand its organic production in Mexico.
