Grapefruit-scallops recipe wins grand prize

Spicy Grapefruit-Glazed Sea Scallops, the winning entry of the Florida grapefruit “How Sweet is Your Love?” national recipe contest.

(April 29, 10:36 a.m.) The winning entry of the Florida grapefruit “How Sweet is Your Love?” national recipe contest went a little spicy instead of sweet.

Judges from the West Palm Beach-based Florida Culinary Institute and the Lakeland-based Florida Department of Citrus’ chef spokeswoman Jennifer Iserloh chose Spicy Grapefruit-Glazed Sea Scallops submitted by Caitlin Keys of Winston-Salem, N.C. as its grand prize-winning recipe.

Keys won $1,000 and a trip to Palm Beach, Fla., where she will cook and learn with Iserloh at the Florida Culinary Institute on June 2, said Rebecca Barry, spokeswoman for the contest.

Barry said the winning recipe, along with the runner up and third-place winners, is featured on the Web site.

Each winning recipe features at least a serving of fresh grapefruit and a cup of grapefruit juice.

Second place went to Sun Spiced Shrimp and Grapefruit Wraps submitted by Shannon Kohn of Simpsonville, S.C., and third place went to Coconut-Macadamia Crusted Chicken, Grapefruit and Avocado Salad, submitted by Emily Hobbs of Ozark, Mo.

Winners were chosen on ease of preparation, taste, nutrition and ability to demonstrate the versatility of Florida grapefruit.
