(May 9) Los Angeles-based Unified Western Grocers Inc. has signed a letter of understanding to “purchase certain assets and assume certain liabilities” of Seattle-based Associated Grocers Inc.

Terms of the deal, which was expected to be completed by year’s end, were not announced, according to a news release.

Founded in 1922, Unified Western Grocers is a retailer-owned wholesale grocery distributor supplying independent retailers throughout the Western U.S.

Associated Grocers, founded in 1934, is a wholesaler providing food, nonfood, general merchandise and retail services to stores throughout Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and the Pacific Rim.
