(March 19, 5:12 p.m.) Getting consumers healthy is the focus of Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter Inc.’s new Your Wellness for Life program.

The program, which launched in January, gives consumers a step-by-step, meal-by-meal map to healthy living. The 15-week program was developed with the help of medical doctor Russ Greenfield, according to a Harris Teeter news release.

The program was an immediate hit with consumers, Greenfield said in a news release.

“We actually thought our initial order would last us until the end of February and are ecstatic to have to place a second order,” Greenfield said in the release.

Participants earn up to 16 points a day by eating healthful foods, using stress management techniques and exercising.

Fresh produce plays a big role in the program. According to the menu planner on Harris Teeter’s Web site, participants must eat at least two cups of fruits and vegetables each day to earn their points.

Consumers who participate in the program also have a chance at being the star of a Harris Teeter commercial.

Upon completion of the 15-week program, consumers are encouraged to submit a before-and-after photo and a written overview of their success while following the program. Harris Teeter already showcases the successes of its employees who have participated in the program, Greenfield said.

“We want to give Harris Teeter shoppers an opportunity to tell their success stories and motivate others,” he said.

The deadline for submissions is April 15 and Harris Teeter plans to begin reviewing candidate entries April 21.

Jennifer Panetta, Harris Teeter’s director of communications, declined to be interviewed for this story.
