(May 29, 1:48 p.m.) The Hass Avocado Board, Irvine, Calif., has added a nutritional page to its Internet site, providing consumers with information on the health benefits of the fruit.

In part, the microsite is designed to correct some misconceptions about avocados, said Jose Luis Obregon, managing director of the Hass Avocado Board.

“We want to dispel the myths around our fruit and get the word out how beneficial it is,” he said.

Among the myths is that avocados are fattening, Obregon said, when in fact the fruit contains monosaturated fats, which the human body requires.

The microsite can be found on the board’s Web site, www.avocadocentral.com.

“We believe we need to be able to have the right information out there about Hass avocados and their nutritional benefits,” Obregon said. “Who better than the Hass Avocado Board?”

To spread the word, the board has approved a public relations effort and has purchased banner display advertisements on a number of food and diet-related Web sites, he said.

“The Internet is a great tool we can use,” he said. “It’s going to be a year-round effort.”
