(Feb. 22) HerbThyme Farms Inc. extended its coast-to-coast coverage to include Canada.

The Compton, Calif.-based company acquired Marvini Fresh Herbs Inc., the retail packing and distribution arm of Les Fines Herbes de Chez Nous Inc., St. Mathieu-De-Beloeil, Quebec.

The deal adds 300 acres in Canada and the Dominican Republic, said Chick Goodman, vice president of sales and marketing. HerbThyme has 500 acres without the merged acreage.

Goodman said the transaction was completed in November.

Bringing in the Marvini acreage and facilities gives HerbThyme access to markets where it previously did not have a strong presence, Goodman said.

“They’re strong from Ontario to the Maritime Provinces,” he said. “We’re trying to be coast-to-coast in all of North America.”

HerbThyme, a combination of The Greenhouse, Quail Mountain Herbs, New England Herbs and McCormick Fresh Herbs, plans to continue packing under Marvini Fresh Herbs’ label in Canada, Les Fines Herbs de Chez Nous.

Goodman said HerbThyme has its eye on further expansion. Last summer, it opened a distribution center in Lakeland, Fla., and it also added 70 acres of organic production to its Palm Beach operation.

“We’re also looking to open a facility in the Midwest in the spring and possibly western Canada,” Goodman said.

HerbThyme has packing and distribution facilities in California, New Hampshire, Florida and Quebec.

Goodman said Les Fines Herbes de Chez Nous retained its processing facilities and plans to continue marketing its pesto and other processed products.
