(July 29, UPDATED COVERAGE, 6:00 p.m.) The Texas Produce Convention has been postponed.

The convention venue and hotel, the Sheraton Beach Resort on South Padre Island, suffered significant water damage from Hurricane Dolly, which made landfall July 23.

Texas Citrus Mutual, Mission, released a statement July 29 saying the convention would be rescheduled.

“Regrettably, we are postponing the Texas Produce convention due to Hurricane Dolly,” it said. “We are working on rescheduling the convention and will let everyone know as soon as we have a new date and location.”

The Sheraton hotel is contacting those who have registered for hotel rooms to inform them of the cancellation.

TCM’s statement said registration refunds will be issued to those who cannot make the rescheduled dates.

The Texas Produce Association, Mission, a co-sponsor of the event, attempted to find a new location that fit the dates of the convention, said Odette McDonald.

“Needless to say, we’re scrambling to figure out where we’re going to have the convention,” McDonald said.

Organizers had a meeting with the McAllen city officials to see if its new convention center was available, but McDonald said another group already was scheduled.

“We’re sure we will contact everyone as soon as we find out,” McDonald said.

The Texas Vegetable Association is a third co-sponsor of the event.
