(Jan. 14) The Department of Defense has awarded Roby’s Country Gardens Inc., Bardstown, Ky., an 18-month contract to supply fresh produce to dining facilities at five military bases and hundreds of schools in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

Diana Stewart, public affairs officer for the Defense Supply Center, Philadelphia, said the contract is worth a maximum value of $8 million per 18 months and has three 18-month options.

Stewart said the Department of Defense sought a private contractor to supply those schools and bases because it is closing the Defense Subsistence Office in Nashville, which previously supplied those locations with fresh fruits and vegetables.

A spokesman for Roby’s could not be reached for comment.
