Fresh Farms has doubled its volumes on some commodities and added eggplant to its lineup to better serve customers.
“Retail is a very big target for us,” said Jerry Havel, director of sales and marketing. “Our growth is customer driven. Part of our thinking with the expanded (line) is to help our customers. We want to be their only stop.”
Fresh Farms, Nogales, Ariz., is the main dealer and distributor for Molina Group Co., Hermosillo, Mexico. The company has its own growing operations and sources fresh fruits and vegetables from other growers.
The Molina family grows several commodities, but cucumbers have always been big for Fresh Farms, Havel said.
“We’ve got double the American slicers this year,” Havel said. “And we’re doing English cucumbers for the first time this year.”
Also new this year in the Fresh Farms lineup is eggplant, added because of the number of requests from customers. Harvest began in early December, and Havel said he expects to have promotable volumes of eggplant through May.
Increasing demand also spurred Fresh Farms to increase its green bell pepper volume by about 25% this year, Havel said.
The peppers should be available into April. Fresh Farms also doubled its volume of green beans this year.
