Burlington, Ontario-based wholesaler Bayshore Produce is the exclusive Ontario distributor for Tesoro. The firm, meaty red plum tomato, developed by Nunhems seed company, is being grown in Mexican greenhouses for Livermore, Calif.-based The Produce Exchange.

Bayshore vice president Ernie Fracchioni said Tesoro is ideal for grilling, pizza and cooking into sauces. It has a long shelf life and doesn’t leave burgers and sandwiches soggy.

Bayshore is selling the 22-ounce high-graphic zipped bag in Sobeys and several independents, and Fracchioni said he hopes to bring other retailers on board soon.

“Retailers ask us what’s different,” he said, “but once they try it they understand.”

Bayshore is also working on trials with Ontario greenhouses that would bring production closer to the Canadian market.
