Straub’s to revamp produce departments

Later this summer, St. Louis-based retailer William A. Straub will begin updating its produce departments, said Greg Lehr, produce category specialist.

Work will begin at Straub’s Clayton, Mo., store west of St. Louis, Lehr said. Its Kingshighway store will likely follow.

“It will be a totally new facelift,” he said.

In the Clayton store, single deck displays will be replaced with multi-deck ones, a boon for the store, given its small footprint, Lehr said. Existing multi-decks will be updated with new lighting, black backs and stainless steel fronts.

One priority of the remodels will be additional space for the retailer’s growing line of organic fruits and vegetables.

The revamped departments will feature wooden fixtures, custom-made by Amish craftsmen in Ohio, Lehr said.

Vaccaro & Sons starts online business

St. Louis-based Vaccaro & Sons launched an online service, stlgrocery.com, in June, said Dale Vaccaro, the company’s owner.

Employees of companies like Edward Jones place custom orders for fresh produce and meats online, then once a week, Vaccaro & Sons delivers it to the company’s office.

If produce is ordered through stlgrocery.com, companies and their employees can be assured they’re getting premium quality, Vaccaro said.

“The biggest and best is what’s going into the online orders,” he said.

Early reviews of the service have been positive.

“It’s really taken off,” Vaccaro said.

Also new at Vaccaro & Sons, the company recently doubled its space with the purchase of its neighbor, unit 16 on the St. Louis Produce Market.

This summer the company closed off the back door of the unit and refrigerated it, Vaccaro said.

“Business is growing, and we need new space,” Vaccaro said.
