(Feb. 9) To help support its tropical line, L&M Cos. Inc., Raleigh, N.C., acquired a pair of Hidalgo, Texas-based companies.

Double E Sales Inc. and Edwards Distributing Co. will bring more than 30 years’ experience in sourcing Mexican tropicals to L&M, said Mike McGee, vice president of production and grower development.

Double E and Edwards Distributing together moved 2 million packages of mixed tropicals last year.

Both acquired companies had been owned by the same family.

Alice Edwards, Kim Edwards and Bill Edwards will remain at the Double E facility and will be joined by L&M’s Texas sales and administration staff in mid-February.

With the acquisition, L&M’s product line is expected to expand to include lemons, tangerines, pineapples and onions to complement its existing line, which includes persian limes, key limes, mangoes, cantaloupes, honeydews, watermelons and papayas.

L&M initially expects to pack under the Nature’s Delight, Double E, San Gabriel, Mexico Western and Sol labels.
