Del Monte Fresh opens plant in Canada
Del Monte Fresh Produce, Coral Gables, Fla., has a new facility in Oshawa, Ontario, according to Dennis Christou, vice president of North American marketing.
The facility will serve multiple purposes. One aspect of the building will be a banana ripening center and forward distribution center.
In addition, the company will use the space to house a fresh-cut fruit and vegetable processing plant, Christou said.
“We believe that the new facility in Oshawa will allow us to better serve our customers and introduce new premium quality Del Monte fresh-cut products to Canadian consumers,” he said.
Oke USA offers loan of retail banana suit
West Bridgewater, Mass.-based Oke USA, the banana importing agency for the Equal Exchange brand and cooperative, has in-store appearances planned during October to celebrate and promote Fair Trade Month.
“We really try to highlight bananas on the store level. It’s a great time for awareness,” vice president Jessica Jones-Hughes said.
The company has a banana suit that it lends to any store interested in promoting the company’s small-operation Fair Trade banana label.
“It’s a lot of fun,” Jones-Hughes said.
The month isn’t all fun and games, however. The company also provides training sessions for retail staff.
“Deepening the level of awareness that we can have an alternative choice in the products we buy is our focus,” she said.
“Our goal is that more people will be aware of what it means to support a small-farmer banana supply chain.”
