Mirabel, Quebec-based HydroSerre Mirabel Inc. is introducing three types of hydroponic lettuce for distribution in Quebec this year, said Daniel Terrault, vice president of business development.

The products are a frisee, oak leaf and small red butterhead salanova.

“We’re still trying to be the best in our field, but it’s a different type of lettuce, that’s all,” Terrault said.

The company introduced them at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit in 2013, Terrault said.

How the program grows will depend on its reception, he said.

“We just don’t want to grow something that we don’t have any sales for, but we want to keep it growing, so slowly we try to create a customer base and make it happen,” he said.

The company is shipping about 500 dozen heads of the new lettuces in the Quebec area, he said.
