Powell said 78% of Marylanders prefer to purchase local produce.

New this year, the department is working on an apple promotion in the fall.

“We expect a good apple crop and we’re working with chain stores for in-store promotions in addition to normal advertising. We always promote apples, but we’re going to step it up this year,” Powell said.

In addition, the department is working on a public television 13-part series that will include produce as well as other sectors.

“The goal of that project is to basically increase awareness of agriculture in the state among consumers,” Powell said.

Each episode will be different and will focus on scientific aspects of farming and tips for preparing different products.

A farm to school program also is planned to be a part of the fall promotions in October.
