Despite growth, organic mangoes are still a small percentage of total mango sales.

Megan McKenna, director of marketing for the Orlando, Fla.-based National Mango Board, said only 1.3% of all mango sales last year were reported for the organic category, but the category has seen growth.

“Retail volume movement of organic whole mangoes increased 40% in 2013. However, the volume is still quite small,” McKenna said in an e-mail.

Of course, for markets that already have a strong organic focus, those percentages are significantly stronger, according to McKenna.

“For retailers that have a strong push for organics, and customers that expect organic products, these numbers are much stronger,” she said.

Gina Garven, category insights manager for C.H. Robinson, Eden Prairie, Minn., said organic mango sales mimic the trends of the conventional category.

“In line with conventional mangoes, organic sales are primarily attributed to bulk sales. The pack sizes making up the largest share of organic mangoes are 33 ounce, 16 ounce, 64 ounce and 10 ounce, which are all seeing positive growth sales year over year,” Garven said.
