National organic seed surveys are due back to the Organic Seed Alliance by Oct. 3.

The survey, conducted every five years, is used to assess seed usage and perceptions about organic seed from certified organic producers, according to a notice from the National Organic Program, which is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The Port Townsend, Wash.-based alliance is a national, nonprofit organization that supports the organic seed movement, according to the NOP newsletter. The alliance seeks survey responses from certified organic producers regardless if they use organic seed in their operations.

“The data collected through this survey will be analyzed and compiled as part of the next State of Organic Seed report, which will be published in 2015,” according to the newsletter. “This report captures successes, obstacles, opportunities and risks in organic seed systems, and will offer detailed recommendations for improving access to seed that is optimal for U.S. organic agriculture.”

The online survey is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JFRSKKZ. All responses will be kept confidential and processed in aggregate with no individual or farm identified in the resulting data, according to the alliance website.

Jared Zystro, research and education specialist at the alliance, is handling questions concerning the survey. He can be reached at 707-502-9984 or via e-mail at jared@seedalliance.org.
