The National Potato Council’s 2014 Potato Expo takes place Jan. 8-10 in downtown San Antonio.

Now in its sixth year, the expo has become the largest conference and trade show for North America’s potato industry.

Mark Szymanski, the council’s director of public relations in Washington, D.C., said the expo will cover the top issues facing the potato industry and showcase the latest products and services for production, storage and distribution.

The 2013 expo in Las Vegas attracted 1,900 attendees and 149 exhibitors, Szymanski said, and he expects to surpass those numbers in San Antonio.

“Word is getting out, and it’s growing,” Szymanski said.

To give growers and shippers more time to network and meet customers at the trade show, one breakfast will be held right on the show floor.

An educational stage on the show floor will be busy with 30-minute presenters on topics ranging from postharvest and storage technology to trends in world markets and new biotech potatoes developed by Boise, Idaho-based J.R. Simplot Co.

Guest speakers include author and economist Ben Stein, best known for his role in the movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”; inspirational speaker Jim Abbott, a former Major League Baseball pitcher born without a right hand; Peter Zeihan, on international politics; and agricultural futurist Lowell Catlett from New Mexico State University.

The council also plans general sessions that focus on global and agricultural economics, as well as market-targeted breakout sessions.

Szymanski promises delegates won’t leave hungry, with all the barbecue, brisket and potatoes on the menu.
