Organizers of Fresh Summit 2013 in New Orleans plan a variety of sessions and workshops focused on innovation and change.

The Produce Marketing Association’s event schedule includes educational sessions for Friday, Oct. 18, and general sessions and a two-day expo Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 20.

Fourteen workshops will cover a variety of topics that participants can customize or tailor to their own interests through participation in topic area “communities”: Global Connections, Science & Technology, Industry Talent, and Floral.

In Global Connections, seminars include engaging the mobile shopper, expanding market opportunities in China, the rise of socially responsible foodservice and blogging, and crisis communications in a social age.

Science & Technology community sessions include discussions about moving to a food safety culture, mining food safety data and debunking Food Safety Modernization Act myths.

In the Industry Talent section, subjects involve retaining key workers and an economic and financial market outlook.

General sessions focus on the future, according to the Newark, Del.-based PMA.

During an Oct. 19 presentation, author Peter Sheahan, chief executive officer of ChangeLabs, plans to challenge attendees to view their organizations and industries in new ways so they can discover opportunities and increase their competitiveness.

On Oct. 20, innovator Mat Shore, founder of the Outside In consulting and training company, is scheduled to discuss the “Seven Deadly Sins of Innovation.”

Shore plans to highlight examples of innovation that may inspire business leaders to rethink how their businesses work.

New this year, an Innovation @ Work destination area on the show floor will feature PMA staples, including the New Products Showcase with a Just 4 Kids section returning from its debut last year.

The Impact Awards for Excellence in Packaging as well as Sensory Experience recipe contest finalists are included in the section.

Also new, a Digital Innovations section featuring mobile applications and software will be in the New Products area.
