Potatoes are an important category for specialty produce companies like World Variety Produce Inc.

The Los Angeles-based company expects a 10% increase in distribution of creamer potatoes this year, which it carries in a variety of colors including red, yellow and purple.

The company offers four proprietary varieties: Dutch Yellow, Pee Wee Dutch Yellow, Ruby Gold and Pee Wee Ruby Gold.

Retailers and consumers seem to be picking up on the larger bags of these tiny potatoes, said Robert Schueller, director of public relations for World Variety Produce. Schueller said the 3-pound bags of the Dutch Yellow, Ruby Gold and fingerling medley are gaining in popularity. Traditional pack sizes for creamer potatoes are 12-, 16- or 24-ounces.

Schueller said the company also is seeing growth in its organic russet category.
