Coral BeachTodd Baggett, president of RedLine Solutions, Santa Clara, Calif., said the label for these sweet potatoes was custom designed for shippers who use 50-pound mesh bags with drawstrings as their cases. The label can be attached to the drawstring to meet Produce Traceability Initiative requirements for case-level tracking. Baggett said RedLine also recently began hosting a cloud database that works with RedLine’s PTI Lite product.NEW ORLEANS — RedLine Solutions president Todd Baggett demonstrated enhancements to produce traceability software and hardware, including a new cloud database for PTI Lite customers, on the Fresh Summit expo floor Oct. 18-20.

Baggett said the database makes it easier for users to sort information by different variables.

Such options are part of what spurred members of the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association to vote in favor of adopting RedLine software and hardware to meet retailers’ traceability requirements.

“The association stepped up and did the research and cost comparisons for its members and then asked them to vote. That saved the members a lot of time and frustration,” said Baggett.

Duane Maatz, executive director of the Antigo, Wis.-based association, said the members liked the RedLine products and the company’s reputation for helping users smoothly transition into using the software and computer equipment needed to print the case-level labels retailers such as Wal-Mart require.

Working with the association on research regarding traceability systems, officials from Bancroft, Wis.-based RPE Inc. helped with the statewide effort, said Chuck Curl, RPE sales manager.

The association has about 150 member growers. Wisconsin is third in potato production in the U.S., according to the U.S., Department of Agriculture.

“The WPVGA has done a fantastic job of pulling all of the Wisconsin-based shippers together to find a solution for the entire state. I am amazed that we were able to have a state-wide consensus,” Curl said.

Curl said one of the biggest selling points for RPE was RedLine’s ability to meet the needs of shippers who want to integrate traceability systems into their existing computer framework as well as those who want standalone traceability systems.

“We have packing sheds that vary in size and production levels so RedLine is able to meet all of our PTI requirements,” Curl said. “RedLine offers the additional functionality of having the varying sticker templates unique to each customer, which saves time and minimizes the potential for mistakes.”
