Albert’s Organics to open warehouse
Bridgeport, N.J.-based, Albert’s Organics Inc. plans to open a warehouse in Logan Township, N.J., this summer.
The 70,000-square-foot facility will replace the company’s existing facility, also located in Logan Township, and will have the opportunity to expand another 25,000 square feet down the road.
“Our East Coast distribution center, which is also our national headquarters, is the busiest of our seven national distribution locations. This new facility will allow us to serve our customers more effectively and efficiently,” said Simcha Weinstein, director of marketing.
The facility should be completed in June.
Charlie’s Produce adds retail warehouse
In March, Seattle-based Charlie’s Produce opened a new retail warehouse down the street from their original location in Seattle.
The new location will focus on retail only, while the original location will remain open and now focus on foodservice.
“We split our inventory and divided it into two warehouses to give us more room,” said Diane Dempster, manager of Farmer’s Own, the local organic program at Charlie’s Produce.
Before the move, the new warehouse location was remodeled with more energy efficient lighting and new equipment.
Earl’s Organic Produce marks 25th anniversary
San Francisco-based Earl’s Organic Produce celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and the company enjoys continued growth.
“We have 60 employees now, which is the most we’ve ever had, said owner Earl Herrick.
The company has been focusing on developing a middle management segment of the company, Herrick said.
Homegrown Organic merges operations
Homegrown Organic Farms, Porterville, Calif., purchased a building in Kingsburg, Calif.
“The new facility will consolidate packing and shipping under one roof. That’s a huge move for us, and a lot of exciting things will happen with efficiencies and logistics,” chief executive officer Scott Mabs said.
Homegrown will now be able to offer consolidation services to customers as an opportunity to help manage their organic programs, according to a news release.
The company also added a new lemon sizer at its Southern California location in Riverside.
The new machine was added in late March.
Larry Jacobs, owner of Jacobs Farm/Del Cabo, Pescadero, Calif., was honored with the National Resource Defense Council’s 2013 Growing Green Award in the Business Leader category.
Jacobs was selected out of several hundred nominees, according to Marina Pace, director of marketing, Jacobs Farms/Del Cabo.
Nature Fresh Farms tries organic peppers
Nature Fresh Farms, Leamington, Ontario, is doing some organic trials for organic peppers, according to Peter Quiring, founder and president.
“We’ve been working on it since last summer, getting information on the nutrients that are allowed and available, growing conditions, and certification,” Quiring said.
The company’s organic trials began in mid-February with yellow and orange pepper varieties.
Naturipe Farms to grow more organic berries
Naples, Fla.-based berry grower-shipper Naturipe Farms LLC expects growth in its organic berry production for 2013, according to Jim Roberts, vice president of sales.
The company offers a large organic strawberry, blueberry, and blackberry program.
“On the whole we are expecting a 40-50% increase in organic berries this year versus last year,” he said.
