The Little Potato Co. uses contests to boost sales

Although its name and proprietary mini varieties suggest a focus on all things small, the owners of The Little Potato Co. think big when it comes to promotions.

Founded by the father-daughter duo of Jacob van der Schaaf and Angela Santiago, the Edmondton, Alberta, potato-growing operation recently wrapped up a website consumer sweepstakes for a week-long trip to a rainforest and is in the midst of another contest that will send someone to Paris for a week.

The rainforest trip promoted the company’s Organic Beauties line while the seven-night Paris trip is linked to its French seasonal varieties Amandine and Chérie, according to the grower’s website. The Paris contest ends March 31.

To enter, consumers buy specially tagged bags of the featured potatoes and go on the Internet to enter a code from the tag. Once on the website, consumers can find recipes, read about the development of The Little Potato Co. proprietary varieties and meet the growers who now span five Canadian provinces as well as Florida, California, Arizona, Georgia and Washington.
