(Oct. 5) Mastronardi Produce Ltd. has a sweet addition to its specialty line thanks to an agreement with Greenhouse Gourmet Foods LLC.

By the end of 2007, Kingsville, Ontario-based Mastronardi plans to start marketing the Strawberry Tomato under its Sunset label, which also includes the Campari and Splendido tomatoes and the Ancient Sweet Pepper, said Paul Mastronardi, executive vice president.

Mastronardi Produce initially will market the 30 acres of Strawberry Tomatoes grown in Mexico by Delta, British Columbia-based Greenhouse Gourmet, which total about 1 million cases a year, Mastronardi said.

“Our goal is to increase that with the resources that Mastronardi has with more than 1,200 acres of greenhouses,” he said. “We can expand the variety and plant more of it. This adds another specialty tomato to our customer base.”

Mastronardi said the acreage is in Canada (400 acres), the U.S. (200 acres), and Mexico and Central America (600 acres).

For Greenhouse Gourmet, the deal expands the Strawberry Tomato’s reach, said Robert Toews, president.

“It is going to make it a broader offering through a larger customer base through Mastronardi,” Toews said. “The goal of the deal with Mastronardi was to make the Strawberry Tomato a better program.”
